My thoughts and prayers go out to the brave souls onboard the ARA San Juan. All Submariners are a breed apart, the risks they run and the way they have to operate are so far from normality. The difficulties and skill required to operate a Submarine need a very unique kind of exceptionally talented and strong individual. In times of crisis the skill and training and expertise of these incredible people shines through.
The loved ones at home are no less unique – living with constant unknowns, supporting their sailors and showing incredible resilience, trust and support.
Submarines are a terrible weapon, but they, the people who serve in them and the ones ashore keep the peace; the enormous cost is something those of us in our safe warm homes must pay a huge debt of gratitude to.
